YOUR Q's & OUR A's

 Q's & A's
  • "We would like to come as a couple but my partner does not want to ride". RH

Our hotel Chez Amaliya is a wonderful place to chill by the pool for a few days. It is surrounded by a palm tree filled oasis and the whole area is full of stunning walks. We can arrange for a guide to take them walking and exploring with the possibility of meeting some of the local crafts people who still work there in a traditional way.

The Town of Tafroute is only a few minutes drive down the road and it is a good place to experience the hustle & bustle of Morocco with a meander through the Souks. Alternatively they can hop in the support vehicle, enjoy the stunning scenery and join the group for cafe and lunch breaks out in the wilderness.

  • "Hi Dave, what tyres are you using in Morocco?". JL

I don't want this to sound like an ad because there are lots of manufacturers producing some well thought out tyres for gravel bikes using mixed surface roads.

For the last 12 months I have had 32mm (and wider) Panracer Gravel Kings SK's on all my bikes. They just seem to have the grip, speed and comfort in the mixed dry conditions of Morocco and on the dreadful winter roads of South Oxfordshire. Pat on the back from me Panracer.

  • "What is the best chainset for Moroccan?" DH

1x and 2x will do everything well or a triple MTB set up which we all rode around on for years would be prefect too. Just make sure you have a really good range of gears as the road sections are long and you want to hold a reasonable pace but you definately don't want to run out of gears on some of the longer climbs.

We have been using chain wax out there which does seem to keep the dust and grip out but you have to re-apply it everyday. Last year I could not find cycle chain lube anywhere out there and ended up putting on some heavy duty motorbike chain oil. My chain looked dreadful after a couple of days but actually worked like a dream for the whole two week tour.

  • "We are a cycling group of 12 can we add on a second week for a tour?" DT

Certainly, we would need more information about the group and the type of tour you would like but we have the infrastucture to organise every aspect for you. One idea would be to ride up to Taroudant and from there go over the awesome Tizi n Test pass with it's 30km climb, then spend a rest day in the madness of Marrekesh. We will be adding a touring page over the next couple of months.

  • "It says challenging in the main text how difficult is it?"

Ah good question. We have currently descibed the area as challenging because of the combination of climbs, surfaces and heat. Regular road and MTB riders in the UK will be able to enjoy the riding in the area and we have a great support team backing us up. We are currently looking to grade our weeks and in the future have the ability to run mixed groups at the same time. It is not all challenging so lets refine that to; moderatly- challenging but not easy or extreme.

Kim and I are headed there later in March and we will start grading the routes with the hope that we can add and "Easy-ish" week to tour schedual.
